A practicing attorney, Bernstein was elected to the Wayne State University Board of Governors in 2003, apparently becoming the first blind person to run for statewide office in Michigan. Richard was born with congenital cataracts and severe astigmatism, and as a result, can only read Braille, cannot write or drive, and was in special education for his student career. These circumstances and unique experiences have fueled his passion for making a difference and improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
He has fought to end discriminatory practices, and fought for the rights of all persons with disabilities. He took on Governor John Engler's administration when proposed changes would have adversely-effected the state's special education system. In an effort to address the transportation needs of minorities and disabled citizens, he has filed lawsuits against the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments as well as the City of Detroit.
His commitment to demonstrating the abilities of persons with disabilities also extends to his personal life. In recent years, he has trained for, and competed in, various marathons, including the Detroit Free Press International Marathon and the New York Marathon. With the assistance of another runner, Richard completes the 26.2-mile course with his white cane in hand amid the cheers of bystanders.
